Jeffrey Westphal dies in fatal McHenry motorcycle crash

Fatal McHenry motorcycle crash death of Jeffrey Westphal – Obituary

Jeffrey Westphal, 27, of McHenry, was identified as the motorcyclist who lost his life in a collision on Sunday at the intersection of Johnsburg and Miller roads.

According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, high speed is suspected to have played a role in the incident. Westphal was riding a 2009 Kawasaki motorcycle southbound on Johnsburg Road when he collided with a 2021 Honda Civic that was turning north from Miller Road.

The crash left both vehicles stopped in the intersection. Westphal, who was wearing a helmet, was transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital, where he was declared deceased. The 17-year-old driver of the Civic sustained minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital, while a 45-year-old passenger in the vehicle was unharmed. Both individuals were reportedly wearing seat belts, and the car’s airbags deployed during the impact.

Emergency personnel from McHenry Township and Spring Grove Fire Protection Districts responded alongside deputies from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Johnsburg Police, and McHenry County Conservation District police.

The Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office are continuing to examine the details of the crash.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with Westphal’s funeral expenses and provide support for his 3-year-old son, affectionately known as JJ.
