Missing Mary Maynard and family found dead a year after Alaska Kachemak Bay boating accident

Fatal Kachemak Bay boating accident death of Mary Maynard – Obituary

Mary Maynard, 37, of Waco, Texas, was one of four family members who went missing in August 2023 during a boating trip in Kachemak Bay near Homer, Alaska. Officials have now confirmed the discovery of their sunken vessel along with human remains believed to be those of the missing family.

 

Mary was on board a 28-foot aluminum boat with her husband, David Maynard, and their two young sons, Colton, 11, and Brantley, 8, when the boat reportedly capsized around 7 p.m., roughly 16 miles west of the Homer Spit. Despite an initial search effort by the U.S. Coast Guard, the operation was suspended after nearly 24 hours due to a lack of new leads.

 

Subsequent efforts using sonar by the Alaska Dive, Search, Rescue, and Recovery Team were initially unsuccessful. In April 2024, additional groups including Support Vessels of Alaska, Vision Subsea, and Benthic Geoscience Inc. joined the search. By early May, they had located a boat submerged in 180 feet of water, later confirmed via remotely operated equipment as the vessel the Maynard family had used.
