New York Mills, MN Man Izak Schermerhorn Arrested in Otter Tail County for Fatal DWI Crash

NEW YORK MILLS, MN — Izak Schermerhorn, an 18-year-old resident of New York Mills, was arrested in Otter Tail County in connection with a fatal one-vehicle crash suspected to be caused by drinking and driving.

According to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, Schermerhorn was taken into custody on Tuesday night near the intersection of 370th Street and 640th Avenue, approximately five miles north of Wadena. Authorities say the incident occurred around 10:45 p.m. and resulted in the death of 18-year-old Blake Unger of Bluffton, who was found near the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Unger was a recent graduate of New York Mills High School, according to school superintendent Adam Johnson.

Schermerhorn was transported to the Otter Tail County Detention Facility and is currently facing charges of criminal vehicular homicide, fourth-degree DWI, and underage drinking and driving.
