Varick Lawrence, a Stillman College alumnus and father to a 9-month-old son, was tragically killed in a car accident in Forest Park, Georgia, over Memorial Day weekend. The crash also took the lives of fellow Stillman alumna Destiny Gardner and current student Sieas Elliott.

 

The fatal collision occurred on Friday, May 23, near Interstate 75 and Old Dixie Road, according to Clayton County Police. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

 

Lawrence, who graduated from Stillman College in 2023, was an active member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity and had built a career as a baseball coach in the Atlanta area. His passion for the sport and mentorship impacted many young athletes in the community.

 

Alongside his fiancée, Destiny Gardner, Lawrence was raising their 9-month-old son, Zaire. The couple had been planning to marry before their lives were cut short in this heartbreaking accident. Lawrence’s grandmother, Dot Mitchell, expressed the family’s grief, stating, “We should be planning a wedding, not funerals.”

 

Stillman College recognized Lawrence’s dedication to both his alma mater and his community, noting that he remained deeply connected to the school and its values even after graduation. His contributions extended beyond baseball, reflecting a strong commitment to those around him.

 

Terrance Whittle, former head baseball coach and Stillman’s director of athletics, shared his sorrow over the loss. He remembered Lawrence as a young man of great spirit and brotherhood, whose impact will continue to be felt by the many lives he touched.
