Fatal Tyee rollover crash death of Anthony W. Forbes – Obituary

Anthony W. Forbes, 55, has been identified as one of the two victims who died in a devastating vehicle rollover on Weyerhaeuser timber company land west of Tyee, Oregon. The crash, which also claimed the life of his wife, Mandi S. Forbes, 50, occurred in the early hours of Saturday, May 24.

Authorities from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reported that the couple’s 1986 Suzuki Samurai left BLM road 24-8-35 1 and rolled down a steep embankment. Their bodies were found approximately 215 feet from the roadway, having been ejected from the vehicle during the crash. The car eventually came to a stop roughly 500 feet downhill in a heavily wooded ravine.

The accident was reported at around 5 p.m. Saturday through a satellite-assisted Text-to-911 by someone scouting for bear hunting season. Responding deputies found crash evidence and called in Search and Rescue teams. Due to the hazardous conditions and nightfall, recovery efforts were delayed until Sunday morning.

Authorities stated the terrain was extremely challenging, with slope angles between 27 and 50 degrees. Nearly 15 responders, including Central Douglas Fire and Rescue’s Steep Angle Rescue Team, worked together to retrieve the bodies.

Evidence at the scene suggested that alcohol may have contributed to the crash, and neither victim was wearing a seatbelt. The Forbes couple, residents of Drain, had a valid permit to be on the Weyerhaeuser property. Deputies believe the crash happened hours before discovery.
