Chicago, Illinois Man Thomas Phelps Arrested in Chicago for Fatal South Side Shooting
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — Thomas Phelps, a 33-year-old resident of Chicago, was arrested in Chicago in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred on the city’s Far South Side.
According to the Chicago Police Department, Phelps was taken into custody on Tuesday during a stop in the 8200 block of South Peoria Street. Authorities say the incident took place earlier that afternoon on May 27, involving an argument between Phelps and 38-year-old Cordell L. Avant in the 11000 block of South Ashland Avenue.
Phelps allegedly fired multiple shots at Avant from a gray SUV before fleeing the scene. Avant was transported to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he later died from his injuries.
Phelps was transported to a local detention facility and is currently facing charges related to the incident, including one felony count of first-degree murder, one felony count of manufacturing and delivering cannabis, and two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance. He is scheduled for a detention hearing on May 30.
