COLUMBUS, OHIO — Joseph Johnson Jr., an 18-year-old, and Zion Cantrell, a 14-year-old, both residents of Columbus, were arrested in Columbus in connection with the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Richard D. Murphy earlier this month.
According to the Columbus Division of Police, Johnson and Cantrell were taken into custody on Tuesday by the Columbus Police SWAT team. Authorities say the incident took place on May 12 around 5:27 p.m. in the first block of South Princeton Avenue, where officers found Murphy unresponsive with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead at 6:02 p.m.
A preliminary investigation suggests an argument preceded the shooting. Specific charges and details about whether the suspects will be tried as adults have not been released.
Both suspects remain in custody, and the case is under active investigation by the Columbus Division of Police Homicide Unit.
