Fatal Morgan Park shooting death of Cordell L. Avant – Obituary

Cordell L. Avant, 38, was shot and killed early Tuesday morning following a confrontation in Chicago’s Morgan Park neighborhood, according to police reports.

Authorities say that around 1:15 a.m., an argument broke out between Avant and 33-year-old Thomas Phelps in the 11000 block of South Ashland Avenue. During the dispute, Phelps allegedly fired multiple shots at Avant, striking him several times.

Phelps, a resident of the Auburn Gresham area, was taken into custody later the same day. He has been charged with one count of murder along with several drug-related offenses. His court appearance is scheduled for Friday.

The investigation into the incident remains active as officials continue reviewing evidence and witness statements.
