Fatal Cobb County caregiver neglect death of Earl Douglas – Obituary
Earl Douglas, a resident of Marietta, Georgia, was found deceased in his home on Stoneridge Drive, and his caregiver, 62-year-old Rachel Ward, has been arrested and charged in connection with his death.
According to the arrest affidavit, Douglas suffered from severe health issues, including infected bedsores and drastic weight loss. Authorities allege that Ward failed to provide basic care, keeping Douglas in unsanitary conditions without air conditioning and neglecting to clean his room, bedding, or his body when soiled.
Neighbors, who had known the pair for years, expressed shock. Bobby Mosher, who lived next door for three decades, said Ward had previously seemed attentive and kind. He recalled seeing Douglas on the porch and remembered an incident where Douglas fell from his wheelchair, appearing to be in pain as Ward struggled to help him.
Mosher said he urged her to call an ambulance at the time, suspecting something was seriously wrong. On Wednesday morning, Mosher watched as police arrived and took Ward into custody. It was then that officers informed him Douglas had died.
Ward is currently being held without bond at the Cobb County Jail. She faces charges of Neglect of an Elderly Person. A court date has not yet been announced.
