Fatal Greenville County shooting death of Johnny A. Collins Jr. – Obituary

Johnny A. Collins Jr., 51, of Greer, was killed Thursday during a police-involved shooting outside of Greer, South Carolina, according to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.

The incident took place on Cannon Road, where Greenville County deputies were helping Spartanburg County authorities locate a suspect wanted from their area. Around 12:11 p.m., a tip led deputies to the 3000 block of Cannon Road, where they encountered Collins, who was armed.

According to Sheriff Hobart Lewis, deputies opened fire after Collins emerged with a weapon. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured in the exchange.

Following the incident, five Greenville County deputies were placed on paid administrative leave, a standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. An autopsy for Collins is scheduled for Friday.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting. Further updates are expected on the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office YouTube channel in July.
