Johnny Andrew Collins Jr., 51, of Greer, was shot and killed by Greenville County Sheriff’s deputies on May 29. The incident took place around 12:11 p.m. as deputies were assisting the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office in locating Collins, who was wanted on several outstanding charges.

The encounter occurred at 3412 Collins Road in Greer. Authorities reported that Collins displayed a weapon, prompting the deputies to open fire. He was declared dead at the scene by 12:22 p.m., according to Greenville County Coroner Kristine Strange.

Records from Spartanburg County indicate that Collins had evaded home detention in October 2024, following charges related to attempted murder and kidnapping.

In response to the incident, Sheriff Hobart Lewis confirmed that all five deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave. This marks the fifth deputy-involved shooting for the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office so far this year, as reported by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
