Authorities in Columbus County have taken a suspect into custody following a deadly incident on May 27 in Riegelwood that claimed the life of 31-year-old Jonathan Baldwin of Clarkton. Deputies responded to a shooting on Brown Town Road and discovered Baldwin suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency personnel with Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire Rescue transported Baldwin to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
Investigators identified 28-year-old Quashaun Freeman of Bolton as the individual responsible. Officials say the confrontation between Freeman and Baldwin began as a verbal dispute that escalated into gunfire.
Freeman was apprehended earlier today at an apartment complex in Raleigh. During the arrest, law enforcement officers recovered both a firearm and ammunition believed to be connected to the shooting.
The case remains under active investigation, and Sheriff Bill Rogers noted that additional charges may be filed.
Sheriff Rogers also shared that he met with Baldwin’s family to offer support, expressing heartfelt sympathy to them during this difficult time.
