Fatal Phoenix shooting death of Omega McDaniels – Obituary
Omega McDaniels, 21, was fatally shot during the early morning hours of May 27 in south Phoenix, according to police.
Phoenix officers responded to a report of gunfire just after 4:30 a.m. near the intersection of 19th Avenue and Buckeye Road. Upon arrival, they discovered McDaniels with gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital by emergency crews but later died from his injuries.
Authorities identified two individuals believed to be involved in the shooting. Both men were detained and questioned, during which they claimed they acted in self-defense. After providing their statements, they were released.
The case remains under investigation and will be forwarded to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for review upon completion. No further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident have been made public at this time.
McDaniels was known to be the brother of Christopher Hampton, a former football player at Cesar Chavez High School who tragically drowned in Show Low Lake in 2023 during a school football camp. Their father, who shares the same name, is also named Omega McDaniels.
