Rodney Gardner, 74, tragically died in a devastating fire that broke out late Wednesday night at the Independence Hall apartments located on Burress Street in north Houston.
The blaze began in a second-floor unit of Building 13 around 10:51 p.m., rapidly spreading to six neighboring units, ultimately resulting in the total loss of the building.
Firefighters arrived swiftly and escalated the response to a 2-alarm fire due to the presence of seniors and people with disabilities in the building. Despite dangerous conditions and heavy fire, rescue efforts were immediately underway.
While a primary search was completed quickly, Gardner’s body was discovered during a secondary sweep at 11:35 p.m. Three others were injured, including one who escaped by jumping from a window.
The Houston Fire Department responded with 80 firefighters and 41 pieces of equipment. No firefighters were injured. The American Red Cross is assisting those displaced by the fire, providing shelter and aid.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire through the fire department’s arson division. Family and neighbors remember Gardner warmly as a lively and beloved member of the community.
