Fatal Roanoke, Virginia car crash death of Amarani Amaya Gomez – Obituary

Nineteen-year-old Amarani Amaya Gomez of Roanoke was killed late Friday night in a tragic head-on collision in northwest Roanoke, according to police.

The incident occurred around 11:39 p.m. at the intersection of Cove Road and Dansbury Drive NW. Authorities say a red Jeep Wrangler heading southbound crossed the double yellow line into oncoming traffic, forcing a northbound Chevrolet Cruze to attempt evasive maneuvers.

However, just as the Cruze tried to avoid impact, the Jeep returned to its lane, causing a collision that claimed Gomez’s life at the scene. She was seated in the front passenger seat of the Cruze.

Another passenger, 18-year-old Mariangela Duenas, who was in the rear right seat, was taken to the hospital but later died from her injuries. A 17-year-old male passenger remains in critical condition, and the 19-year-old male driver suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the Jeep, identified as 48-year-old Reynaldo Diovanis Hinojosa Mayan of Roanoke, sustained minor injuries and was found to be intoxicated. A field sobriety test and a breath sample confirmed his Blood Alcohol Content was more than double the legal limit.

Mayan has been arrested and charged with two counts of DUI manslaughter as well as DUI. Authorities are working with the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office to evaluate the possibility of additional charges.
