Lee Anthony Funderburk dies in fatal Charlotte, N.C. homicide

Fatal Charlotte, N.C. homicide death of Lee Anthony Funderburk – Obituary

Authorities with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have confirmed that Lee Anthony Funderburk, 53, whose disappearance was reported in 2016, has now been identified as the victim in a homicide case.

 

On May 31, 2016, officers were dispatched to the 9900 block of Clairemore Place following a report of a missing person. Upon arrival, they learned that Mr. Funderburk had not been seen, and a formal report was filed. Despite ongoing efforts and the pursuit of various leads over the years, investigators were unable to determine his whereabouts.

 

Nearly nine years later, on May 14, 2025, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a local scrapyard where human skeletal remains had been discovered. Investigators from the Sheriff’s Office, along with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, examined the scene and located the remains inside a vehicle that had been registered to Mattie Mae Funderburk, the mother of the missing man.

 

Through investigative efforts, the remains were conclusively identified as Lee Anthony Funderburk. The medical examination determined that he had been the victim of a homicide. His family has since been informed.
