Fatal Croydon, Sydney house fire death of David Grantham – Obituary
David Grantham, 80, has tragically died following a devastating house fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning in Sydney’s inner west suburb of Croydon. His son, Christopher David Grantham, 50, has been charged with his murder.
Emergency services were called to Irrara Street shortly after 4am in response to reports of a residential fire. Firefighters managed to subdue the flames and, upon searching the premises, discovered the body of the elderly man believed to be David Grantham.
Police quickly established a crime scene and began investigating the cause of the fire. Authorities suspect an accelerant was used to start the blaze. Later that day, they released a photo of Christopher Grantham and appealed to the public for assistance in locating him. He was subsequently found and taken into custody.
Investigators also linked Christopher to an incident that occurred shortly after the fire, where a man fitting his description allegedly brandished a machete and stole cigarettes from a service station on Parramatta Road in Haberfield around 4:20am.
Superintendent Christine McDonald from Burwood Police confirmed Christopher’s relationship to the victim and noted that an elderly woman, also connected to the family, had left the home around 1am—several hours before the fire began. The reasons for her departure remain unclear.
The investigation is ongoing as police work to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of David Grantham.
