Justin Rivera, a 29-year-old officer with the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, tragically died Friday morning after falling from a ninth-story window at the Hudson County Administration Building in Jersey City, New Jersey.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office reported that the incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. Rivera, who was on duty at the time, fell from the top floor of the courthouse building and was transported to a nearby hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, around 10 a.m.
Authorities have classified the death as accidental, but they continue to investigate the sequence of events that led to the fatal fall.
Eyewitness Steve Roosen, who was walking past the building when the tragedy happened, described the scene as deeply unsettling and heartbreaking.
Sheriff Frank Schillari called Rivera’s passing one of the most devastating days in the department’s history. In a statement, he praised Rivera’s character and service, noting that he embodied the values of honesty, empathy, and professionalism.
The courthouse was closed to the public on Friday due to a power outage, though officials confirmed the outage was not connected to Rivera’s death.
