Kizzy Cato dies in fatal Claxton Bay crash

Fatal Claxton Bay car crash death of Kizzy Cato – Obituary

Kizzy Cato, 38, of Erica Street, Laventille, was one of four people killed in a high-speed car crash Saturday night along the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway near Claxton Bay. The accident also claimed the lives of Steve Elder, another adult woman, and a young girl who have not yet been publicly identified.

The crash happened around 10 p.m. when a Hyundai Creta, reportedly traveling at high speed in the southbound lane, veered off the roadway near the Claxton Bay overpass. The SUV rolled several times before landing in a grassy area between the highway and an exit ramp.

Cato, who owned the Hyundai, was among those found unresponsive in the wreckage. Emergency personnel pronounced all four victims dead at the scene. One man survived and was rushed to the San Fernando General Hospital, later transferred to Point Fortin Hospital in critical condition.

The Claxton Bay overpass is considered one of the most hazardous areas on the highway due to a sharp bend at the bottom of a hill, which has been the site of multiple accidents.

In response to the crash, Arrive Alive president Sharon Inglefield raised concerns about the nation’s traffic safety record, noting that over 328,000 traffic violations have been recorded so far this year. She called attention to cultural attitudes toward driving, urging more accountability and enforcement to prevent further tragedies.
