Fatal Nobleboro, Maine drowning death of Richard Eason – Obituary

Richard Eason, 74, of Ocala, Florida, lost his life Friday afternoon while trying to retrieve his drifting boat on Damariscotta Lake near Nobleboro, Maine.

According to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Eason had launched his boat at the Vannah Road Boat Launch around 1:45 p.m. and was parking his vehicle when wind conditions caused the boat to drift into the lake.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing Eason swim nearly 75 yards into open water in an effort to recover the vessel, but he went under and did not resurface. Officials noted he was not wearing a life jacket at the time.

Local emergency responders quickly arrived and searched the area using boats, but initial recovery efforts were unsuccessful. Around 7 p.m., divers from the Maine Warden Service located Eason’s body in approximately 15 feet of water.

His remains were transported to Halls Funeral Home in Waldoboro. Agencies involved in the response included Nobleboro and Damariscotta Fire and Rescue, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and the Maine Warden Service.
