Fatal Claxton Bay car crash deaths of Steve Elder and Kizzy Cato – Obituary

Steve Elder, 40, from Cunupia, and Kizzy Cato, 38, of Erica Street, Laventille, were killed in a high-speed crash late Saturday night along the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway near the Claxton Bay overpass. The tragic incident also claimed the lives of another adult woman and a young girl who have not yet been identified.

Authorities say the crash occurred around 10 p.m. when a Hyundai Creta, driven at high speed in the southbound lane, lost control and veered off the road. The SUV overturned several times before coming to a stop in a grassy area between the highway and an adjacent ramp.

Emergency responders arrived to find four occupants unresponsive in the wreckage. All were pronounced dead on the scene. A fifth person, the only survivor, was critically injured and taken first to the San Fernando General Hospital, then later transferred to Point Fortin Hospital for further evaluation.

Officials identified Kizzy Cato as the owner of the vehicle. The stretch of road where the crash occurred is notorious for its sharp curve and downhill grade, which has made it a frequent site for serious accidents.

Following the deadly crash, Arrive Alive president Sharon Inglefield expressed concern over the rising number of traffic fatalities in the country, pointing to deeper societal issues. She cited over 328,000 traffic violations in 2025 alone and warned that more than 60,000 motorists should have had their licenses revoked.

Inglefield emphasized that the crisis goes beyond enforcement, saying, “This is about a culture of entitlement and a disregard for responsibility on our roads.”
