Steve Elder dies in fatal Claxton Bay crash

Fatal Claxton Bay car crash death of Steve Elder – Obituary

Steve Elder, a 40-year-old resident of Cunupia, was tragically killed in a high-speed accident late Saturday night along the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway near the Claxton Bay overpass. The crash resulted in the deaths of Elder, Kizzy Cato, an unidentified woman, and a young girl. One adult male survived but remains in critical condition.

According to police, the incident occurred around 10 p.m. when a Hyundai Creta, reportedly traveling at excessive speed in the southbound lane, veered off the road. The vehicle flipped multiple times before coming to rest in the grassy area between the main highway and a nearby ramp.

First responders arrived at the scene to find four victims unresponsive inside the severely damaged SUV. All were declared dead at the scene. Steve Elder was confirmed as one of the victims, along with Cato, who owned the vehicle.

The Claxton Bay overpass, where the crash happened, is known for its sharp curve at the base of a hill—a feature that has contributed to numerous accidents in the past.

In the aftermath, Sharon Inglefield, president of Arrive Alive, highlighted the country’s growing crisis in road safety. She pointed to more than 328,000 traffic tickets issued in 2025 and expressed concern that tens of thousands of drivers continue operating vehicles despite violations that warrant license suspension.

Elder’s untimely death underscores the dangers of reckless driving and the urgent need for stronger road safety measures across Trinidad and Tobago.
