Fatal Carlow shooting death of Evan Fitzgerald – Obituary
Authorities have confirmed that 22-year-old Evan Fitzgerald was the man who opened fire at Fairgreen Shopping Centre in Carlow town before dying by suicide on Sunday evening. Fitzgerald, a local resident from Portrushen Upper, Kiltegan, Rathvilly in County Carlow, was facing serious legal trouble at the time of the incident.
Detectives reported that Fitzgerald was out on bail and due to appear in Naas District Court later this week to receive the book of evidence in a case involving 13 firearms and explosives-related charges. These charges stemmed from a March 2024 incident during which Gardaí confiscated high-powered weapons and ammunition during an intelligence-led operation in County Kildare.
Among the seized items were a Heckler & Koch G3 assault rifle, a Colt M1911 semi-automatic pistol, various rounds of ammunition, and components for explosive substances. Fitzgerald was also charged with possessing black powder and other potentially explosive chemical compounds at his Carlow address.
Officials now believe Fitzgerald did not intend to harm anyone else during the shooting, describing the event as a tragic and public suicide. Garda sources said the shots he fired were not directed at bystanders or any specific individuals.
Fitzgerald had been due in court on Wednesday and was potentially facing up to 14 years in prison if convicted. His actions at the shopping centre sent shockwaves through the local community, though investigators emphasize that no other person was injured in the incident.
