Fatal Brisbane custody death of Lauren Ingrid Flanigan – Obituary

Lauren Ingrid Flanigan, 32, who was facing a murder charge for the death of her young daughter, has died after a medical emergency while in custody at Brisbane Women’s Correctional Centre. Authorities say she was discovered unresponsive in her cell late Friday night and was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital, where she passed away on Sunday.

Queensland Police have confirmed her death, and Queensland Corrective Services stated that a full report will be submitted to the coroner, in accordance with procedures for all in-custody deaths.

Flanigan had recently been charged with the murder of her three-year-old daughter, Sophia Rose, and was awaiting her next court appearance scheduled for July.

The tragic case began on the afternoon of May 26, when residents in Moore Park Beach, north of Bundaberg, reported seeing an unresponsive child in a front yard. Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 4:45 p.m. and found the toddler with multiple injuries. She was pronounced dead at the location.

At the time, two other young children, aged one and two, were also present at the home but were unharmed. They have since been placed in the care of their father.
