Fatal Baldwin Park shooting death of Samuel Riveros – Obituary
Samuel Riveros, a Baldwin Park police officer with nine years on the force, was fatally shot during a violent encounter on Saturday evening. Authorities say Riveros and his partner were responding to a report of gunfire in the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue around 7:15 p.m. when the incident occurred.
Upon arriving, they discovered an unresponsive person on a home’s front lawn. As the officers attempted to assist, they were suddenly attacked by a man armed with a rifle. Riveros was killed in the ambush, and his partner, Officer Anthony Pimental, was injured. Pimental is currently in stable condition.
The original victim found at the scene was later pronounced dead at the hospital, though officials have not yet disclosed that individual’s identity. The gunman who opened fire on the officers was also shot and is reported to be in stable condition.
Police Chief Robert Lopez spoke about the loss, describing Riveros as a devoted officer and person. “He loved snowboarding and was a big fan of the Dodgers,” Lopez said. “He would travel around the country to watch them play. This is a devastating loss.”
Baldwin Park Mayor Alejandra Avila expressed sorrow and urged the community to support one another during this time of grief. “This was a tragic night for our city,” she said.
Following the officer’s death, a solemn procession transported Riveros’ body from Baldwin Park to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office in Boyle Heights. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is now overseeing the investigation.
