Fatal Boom Island Park shooting death of Stageina Whiting – Obituary
Stageina Whiting, 23, of Brooklyn Center, lost her life after being shot during a large gathering at Boom Island Park in Minneapolis on Sunday evening. She succumbed to her injuries at Hennepin County Medical Center from a gunshot wound to her torso, according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Minneapolis police responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 9:30 p.m. and found Whiting gravely wounded at the scene. The shooting followed a confrontation that escalated into violence.
Six other individuals were injured in the gunfire—five men suffered gunshot wounds, including one with life-threatening injuries, while another woman was rendered unconscious.
Police Chief Brian O’Hara described the scene as resembling a “war zone” due to the volume of shell casings found. Authorities believe multiple individuals fired weapons, though no arrests had been made by Monday evening.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey condemned the violence as “completely unacceptable” and expressed condolences to the victims and their families. He noted that the city would be launching “Operation Safe Summer,” a collaborative initiative to reduce violent incidents.
Congresswoman Ilhan Omar also reacted to the tragedy, calling it heartbreaking and emphasizing that public spaces should be safe at all times. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
