Fatal Exeter train accident death of Alicia Leonardi – Obituary
Alicia Leonardi, 42, of Plaistow, lost her life on June 2 after being hit by an Amtrak train in Exeter while trying to rescue a dog from the tracks, according to local police.
Exeter Police Chief Stephan Poulin reported that Leonardi was walking near the railway with a friend and an off-leash dog in a wooded area near the Newfields Road trestle. Around 3:24 p.m., emergency responders were called after reports that two individuals had been struck by a train.
Initial findings indicate that the Amtrak Downeaster train came quickly around a bend behind them, startling the dog, which ran onto the tracks. Leonardi and her companion tried to retrieve the dog just as the train approached.
Tragically, Leonardi was fatally struck during the attempt. Her friend sustained only minor injuries, and the dog was unharmed.
Chief Poulin expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to Leonardi’s loved ones. Exeter police are collaborating with Amtrak and CSX police as the investigation continues.
