Seventeen-year-old Jayshaun Cornelious lost his life early Tuesday morning after a gunman opened fire into a home in the Westwood neighborhood of Cincinnati. According to police, the drive-by shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. in the 3000 block of Percy Avenue.
Investigators say someone in a vehicle approached the residence and began firing multiple shots into the home before speeding away. Cornelious was discovered inside with three gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities.
Captain Stephen Bower of the Cincinnati Police Department reported that ShotSpotter, the city’s gunfire detection system, registered approximately 14 gunshots. Officers recovered several shell casings outside the home.
A nearby resident, Yeshurun Raglin, recalled hearing a rapid series of shots, a brief silence, then more gunfire. He expressed shock that such violence occurred on a street usually filled with teens and children.
No arrests have been made, and police have not released any information on a possible suspect.
Jayshaun Cornelious was a student at Hughes STEM High School. Cincinnati Public Schools issued a statement mourning his death, offering condolences and mental health support to students and staff affected by the tragedy.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
