Fatal Ceres canal death of Luis Anguiano Calzado – Obituary

Luis Anguiano Calzado, a 36-year-old father from Modesto, was discovered dead in a Ceres canal Sunday evening, according to local police.

Authorities said his body was found submerged near the 3000 block of Moore Road around 6 p.m., after individuals walking nearby noticed a figure underwater. Emergency responders retrieved Calzado, but he was pronounced dead approximately 20 minutes later. He was found partially undressed and carrying no form of identification.

Calzado, a father of five, was remembered by Pastor Nate Quiles, who met him during a church outreach in 2019. Quiles said Calzado immediately offered to help and soon became a regular volunteer at community events hosted in Modesto parks, often serving alongside his pastor and acting as a quiet guardian.

Calzado was especially known for his barbecuing skills and his dedication to helping others. Pastor Quiles, from Vine Church in Modesto, described him as deeply committed to his wife and children, even involving them in church life and family trips.

“He was loyal, selfless, and had a generous spirit,” Quiles recalled, adding that Calzado was “a true servant in God’s kingdom.”

Ceres Police reported that the cause of death remains undetermined as they await toxicology results. Investigators have found no clues or eyewitnesses to explain how Calzado ended up in the water.

Detectives continue to investigate and are encouraging anyone with information to contact Sgt. Berber at 209-538-5672.
