Fatal Springfield, Burlington County motorcycle crash death of Omar Kebbabi – Obituary

Omar Kebbabi, a 24-year-old man from Astoria, New York, lost his life in a high-speed collision that occurred on June 20, 2023, along Route 206 in Springfield Township, Burlington County. This incident has now led to criminal charges against Detective Mark Campagna of the New Jersey State Police.

According to state authorities, Campagna was off-duty and operating an unmarked state-issued vehicle when he began pursuing Kebbabi, who was riding a motorcycle. Investigators reported that the detective did not turn on emergency lights or sirens at any point during the chase.

The pursuit extended for roughly three miles and reached speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. Both vehicles were observed weaving through traffic before Kebbabi ultimately collided with a turning SUV at the intersection of Route 206 and Jacksonville-Jobstown Road around 4:50 p.m. The SUV was not involved in the chase and was making a legal left-hand turn. Although the SUV’s driver was not seriously injured, Kebbabi died at the scene.

As a result of the investigation led by the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability within the Attorney General’s Office, Campagna has been formally indicted by a grand jury on a charge of fourth-degree endangering another person. Attorney General Matthew Platkin stated that the detective’s actions endangered not only Kebbabi but also fellow officers and other drivers.

Multiple pieces of video evidence, including dashcam and surveillance footage, were presented during the investigation. New Jersey 101.5 has reached out to Campagna’s legal counsel for comment.
