Montaness Lowe dies in fatal Grand Rapids bar shooting
Fatal Grand Rapids shooting death of Montaness Lowe – Obituary
Montaness Lowe, 31, lost his life after being shot outside a bar in Grand Rapids during the early morning hours of May 23, 2025. Authorities say the shooting followed an altercation at Billy’s Lounge, located on Wealthy Street SE.
According to law enforcement, the confrontation between Lowe and Keith Decelous-Leon Tett Jr., 26, began inside the bar before moving outside. Surveillance footage captured the initial argument, while a witness, Myeshawn Moore, confirmed that Lowe struck Tett in the head. Moments later, Tett reportedly shot Lowe in the abdomen.
Emergency responders transported Lowe to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries. The firearm used in the shooting was later recovered in a neighborhood near the bar, and ballistic testing confirmed it was the weapon involved.
Court documents revealed that Tett and Lowe had a prior personal conflict tied to a romantic relationship with the same woman. Tett told investigators he acted in fear after being punched, claiming self-defense as his justification for opening fire.
Tett now faces an open murder charge along with multiple firearm-related offenses, including being a felon in possession of a firearm. Prosecutors have also labeled him a habitual offender due to previous convictions. He remains in custody at the Kent County Jail without bond, awaiting his next court appearance scheduled for June 17.
