Gabriel Castillo, 20, of Hyattsville, was one of two individuals who lost their lives early Wednesday morning during a police chase that ended in a fatal crash in Baltimore.
The Maryland Office of the Attorney General confirmed the identities of both victims, naming Ezequiel Eduardo Garcia-Chicas, 22, also of Hyattsville, as the second person killed in the incident.
The crash unfolded after a Maryland Transportation Authority officer, Jamal Cofield, attempted a traffic stop on an Infiniti sedan that had exited Interstate 95. Instead of stopping, the driver sped away, prompting a pursuit. The fleeing vehicle eventually lost control and crashed into a support pillar beneath I-95.
Though the officer attempted to provide aid until emergency responders arrived, both Castillo, who was driving, and Garcia-Chicas, the passenger, were declared dead at the scene. No officers were harmed in the incident.
Authorities have not released the reason for the attempted traffic stop, and the Independent Investigations Division continues to look into the events leading up to the crash.
