Fatal Ocean Beach police shooting death of Jacob Lyle Epple – Obituary

Jacob Lyle Epple, 32, was identified as the man who died after being shot by a San Diego police officer following a pursuit in Ocean Beach last week.

On May 31, officers responded to a welfare check on Epple, who reportedly made suicidal statements while blocking traffic on Coronado Avenue. Shortly after arriving, Epple fled in a small black sedan, leading officers on a chase through surface streets that ended at the intersection of Ebers Street and Bermuda Avenue when his vehicle collided with a Jeep.

After exiting his car, Epple continued to make suicidal remarks and approached officers wielding a knife. San Diego Police Officer Yosgart Miranda, a two-year patrolman, fired multiple rounds, striking Epple at the scene. Paramedics attempted to save him before transporting him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No officers were harmed during the incident. The driver of the Jeep reported pain but declined medical treatment. The shooting remains under investigation, with the FBI assisting local authorities. Officials are asking anyone with information to contact the San Diego Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers.
