Shawn Dylan Burt dies in fatal Garland Motel 6 shooting

Fatal Garland Motel 6 shooting death of Shawn Dylan Burt – Obituary

Shawn Dylan Burt, 52, of Hutchins, Texas, was fatally shot by police following a prolonged standoff at a Motel 6 in Garland on Wednesday, June 4. Authorities also discovered a second deceased man inside the motel room after the confrontation ended. The second victim was identified as 69-year-old Donald Bailey Sr. of Dallas, who had apparently died several hours before officers arrived.

The incident began shortly before 2 p.m. when Garland Police responded to a disturbance at the Motel 6 located on LBJ Freeway. Motel management reported that Burt had overstayed his reservation and was no longer welcome after failing to pay for the room. When officers arrived, Burt allegedly brandished a gun and pointed it at them, forcing the initial officers to retreat and call for SWAT assistance.

Attempts to negotiate with Burt, including phone calls and deploying a robot with a cell phone, were unsuccessful. Eventually, SWAT officers deployed tear gas to compel Burt to exit the room. As he approached the window holding a weapon, officers fired multiple shots, fatally wounding him.

After entering the room, police found Burt dead and also discovered Bailey’s body. Investigators determined Bailey had died from a gunshot wound hours earlier, and his death is now being treated as a homicide. Police continue to probe the connection between the two men, the circumstances leading to Bailey’s death, and whether Burt was involved.

No officers were harmed during the confrontation. A handgun was recovered from the scene. The Garland Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division remains actively involved in the ongoing investigation of both deaths.
