David Alan Charlton, 72, was shot and killed Wednesday night in a domestic incident at a home in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Authorities responded to a report of a shooting during a domestic dispute and discovered Charlton deceased at the scene.
His wife, 66-year-old Kimberly Ann Charlton, was taken into custody and later charged with first-degree murder. According to a police report, Kimberly told investigators that David had tried to assault her in a bedroom, but their dog intervened. David then allegedly left the room, grabbed a walking cane, and threatened the dog.
As he followed the dog down the hallway, Kimberly reportedly retrieved a firearm from a bag and pointed it at him. She warned him to stop before allegedly shooting him in the back.
She confessed to pulling the trigger during police questioning. Under Iowa law, a conviction for first-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
