Fatal Mecklenburg County police shooting death of Derek C. Holland – Obituary

Derek C. Holland, a 39-year-old man from Cary, North Carolina, was shot and killed by a Virginia State Police trooper on Sunday, June 8, in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.

The incident began around 3:57 p.m. when officers responded to a report of suspicious activity along Highway 903. Upon arrival, the suspect fled in a vehicle, prompting a police chase.

The pursuit ended when the suspect’s vehicle crashed in an open field. Authorities said Holland then pulled out a knife and did not follow the trooper’s commands. The trooper fired, fatally wounding Holland at the scene.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues. All findings and evidence will be submitted to the Mecklenburg County Commonwealth’s Attorney for review once the investigation is complete.
