Gunner Hyatt dies in fatal Wabash County balloon accident

Fatal Wabash County balloon accident death of Gunner Hyatt – Obituary

Six-year-old Gunner Hyatt tragically passed away in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, on May 29, after likely suffocating due to a Mylar helium-filled balloon, according to Wabash County Coroner Shaun Keepes. The incident occurred last Thursday, prompting an immediate investigation.

Coroner Keepes stated that preliminary autopsy results suggest suffocation consistent with contact with the balloon, and additional tests are still underway to confirm the exact cause. Gunner’s obituary described him as a joyful and spirited child whose laughter brought happiness to everyone around him.

Authorities, including the Mount Carmel Police Department and the Illinois State Police Child Death Task Force, are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

In light of the incident, Keepes is urging the public to recognize the dangers that Mylar balloons may pose to young children, noting that while they are commonly used as party decorations, they carry a serious risk of suffocation or helium-related harm.

A GoFundMe has been organized by Gunner’s family to help cover funeral costs and provide support during this time of mourning. The Wabash County Coroner’s Office extended heartfelt condolences to the Hyatt family and asked the community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers.
