Fatal Sun Valley car crash death of Jose Hernandez – Obituary
A deadly collision in Sun Valley claimed the life of Jose Hernandez, a man in his 90s, and left two Los Angeles police officers injured on Monday afternoon, according to authorities.
The incident occurred around 2 p.m. at the intersection of Saticoy Street and Vineland Avenue. LAPD officials said the officers were driving with emergency lights and sirens, responding to a domestic violence restraining order violation, when their cruiser struck a Honda Accord. Investigators believe Hernandez was attempting a left turn in front of the patrol vehicle when the crash occurred.
Hernandez, who had just left a nearby home after picking up a cake for his wife, was killed instantly. Friends and family mourned the loss at the crash site, where a memorial has since grown. Hernandez was remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a cherished member of the community. He had recently celebrated his birthday.
Carmen Ortega, a longtime friend, described him as a man who felt like family after decades of friendship.
Witness Liessa Hall recalled hearing the loud crash and watching officers rush to help Hernandez. One officer attempted to pull him from the wreckage, but he had already passed.
Both LAPD officers involved in the crash, both 24 years old, were transported to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Detectives are currently reviewing dashcam footage, which was activated when the cruiser’s lights and sirens were turned on, to better understand the sequence of events and the speed at which the officers were traveling.
Residents of the area say that stretch of road has a reputation for frequent accidents, with some expressing concern about growing dangers.
Anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area is encouraged to contact authorities as the investigation continues.
