A tragic dirt bike accident in northwest Charlotte claimed the life of 12-year-old Mike Malanda, police said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg authorities responded to a deadly crash around 2:15 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Auten and Oakdale Roads, where they shut down the area to begin their investigation.

Officers arrived to find Malanda lying unresponsive in the street near a heavily damaged dirt bike and a Ford truck that had also sustained visible damage.

Emergency medical personnel pronounced Malanda dead at the scene. Police confirmed he had been operating the dirt bike at the time of the crash.
