Ryan Phillips, a 25-year-old off-duty deputy with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, lost his life early Saturday morning in a rollover crash on the Lodge Freeway in Detroit. The incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. near Chicago Boulevard.
According to Michigan State Police, the SUV Phillips was driving veered off the road, struck a tree while going up an embankment, then rolled back onto the freeway and caught fire. Phillips was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities noted that Phillips was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. His vehicle was engulfed in flames and obstructing traffic lanes when first responders arrived. Police departments across the region and local residents have expressed their condolences.
The crash is under investigation.
