Damarius Cochran dies in fatal Grand Rapids shooting

Fatal Grand Rapids shooting death of Damarius Cochran – Obituary

Damarius Cochran, age 26, lost his life following a shooting at a motel on 28th Street in Grand Rapids last Saturday evening. The Grand Rapids Police Department reported that the incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. near Jefferson Avenue at the Pleasant Motel. Initially responding to a call about a possible overdose, officers discovered Cochran had been shot and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Authorities have charged 32-year-old Devon Dominique Hayle with open murder and felony weapons offenses in connection with Cochran’s death. Police learned that Hayle was a guest at the motel and may still have been inside when the shooting occurred. The Grand Rapids Special Response Team, also known as the SWAT team, evacuated the motel and made contact with Hayle, who surrendered peacefully without any force.

Police Chief Eric Winstrom praised the officers involved, highlighting their swift and safe handling of the situation, which also protected an adult woman and three children linked to the suspect. The arraignment for Hayle is scheduled for Tuesday. Winstrom extended his sympathies to Cochran’s family during this difficult time.
