Charles Powell Jr., 64, from Corydon, Kentucky, lost his life Monday night after a Henderson County sheriff’s deputy shot him during a confrontation. Kentucky State Police say Powell reportedly threatened relatives with a machete before charging at law enforcement.
The incident took place around 7:30 p.m. on the 100 block of Eighth Street in Corydon. Deputies responded to a disturbance call and found Powell armed with a machete. According to police, Powell ignored orders to drop the weapon and aggressively approached a deputy.
Before using his firearm, the deputy attempted to subdue Powell using a Taser, but the non-lethal method failed to stop him. The officer then fired, striking Powell. Details about the number of shots fired or where Powell was hit have not been disclosed.
The deputy, whose identity has not been released, reportedly provided medical aid until emergency responders arrived. Powell was taken toward a hospital but died in transit.
No law enforcement personnel were injured. Kentucky State Police are leading the investigation at the request of the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office. Detectives arrived shortly after the incident to collect evidence and interview witnesses.
KSP noted that they routinely investigate shootings involving officers across the state and will release more details once essential information is verified and all witness accounts have been obtained.
