Cory Fields dies in fatal East Memphis shooting
Fatal East Memphis shooting death of Cory Fields – Obituary
Cory Fields, 22, was tragically gunned down early Monday morning during a gathering at an Airbnb rental in East Memphis. Police have arrested 18-year-old Jeremiah Tucker in connection with the shooting and charged him with second-degree murder.
Authorities responded to reports of gunfire at a residence on Flamingo Road, near Mt. Moriah, around 12:20 a.m. on June 9. Officers discovered Fields in the driveway suffering from several gunshot wounds. He was rushed to St. Francis Hospital, where he was later declared dead.
Investigators identified Tucker as the suspected shooter after witnesses picked him out in a photographic lineup. Accounts from the scene suggest Tucker had been contacted to sell marijuana at the party. Upon arrival, a dispute reportedly erupted between him and Fields in the driveway, escalating quickly into violence. Witnesses say Tucker shot Fields multiple times before fleeing on foot.
Tucker was taken into custody later that day. At the time of the report, his bond had not yet been determined.
A friend of the Fields family, who preferred to remain unnamed, described Cory—affectionately called “CJ” by those close to him—as a driven and warm-hearted young man with a radiant smile. Fields graduated from Cordova High School and was studying at Coahoma Community College. He was also known for his powerful singing voice and larger-than-life personality.
The family friend expressed outrage over the second-degree murder charge, arguing that shooting someone nine times showed clear intent. “Self-defense is one or two shots,” he said. “Nine is deliberate. You wanted him gone.”
The owner of the Airbnb property declined to comment when contacted by WREG. In a statement, Airbnb condemned the violence and confirmed the guest who made the reservation has been banned. The listing was suspended, and Airbnb’s law enforcement response team is assisting investigators.
This incident is the latest in a string of violent events tied to parties at short-term rental homes in Memphis. Earlier this year, a separate shooting at an Airbnb on Clarke Place left behind 90 shell casings. Another incident occurred near Poplar and North Hollywood.
As part of a response to similar disturbances, Germantown officials passed a local law last year restricting parties where an entry fee is charged in residential neighborhoods.
