Fatal Pueblo County drowning death of Daniel Duane Strawn – Obituary
Daniel Duane Strawn, 44, of Centennial, tragically lost his life in a drowning accident at Lake Pueblo State Park on Saturday, June 7. The Pueblo County Coroner confirmed that Strawn’s death was caused by a swimming mishap at the reservoir.
Authorities were alerted around 2 p.m. when a 911 call reported that CPR was being performed on a man at the lake. According to witnesses, a group had been swimming and water skiing near Rock Creek Cove when Strawn jumped into the water without wearing a life jacket, stating he felt hot. Moments later, he was found floating unconscious in the water.
A boater nearby pulled Strawn from the lake and began administering CPR while contacting emergency services. Despite efforts from responders, including the arrival of a Flight for Life helicopter, Strawn could not be revived.
This incident marks the third fatality at Lake Pueblo in the past month, prompting Colorado Parks and Wildlife to emphasize the importance of water safety. One of the hazards at the lake is the temperature difference: while the water surface may feel warm due to the hot surrounding air, the water below can be dangerously cold. Sudden immersion in cold water can cause muscle cramps, making swimming difficult and increasing the risk of drowning, especially when far from shore.
To promote safety, CPW highlights the availability of free life jacket loaner stations at both the South Fishing area and the Sailboard area of Lake Pueblo. Visitors are encouraged to use these life jackets to protect themselves while enjoying the water.
