Fatal Port Wentworth crash death of Dwayne Simmons – Obituary

Dwayne Simmons, 56, from Savannah, was involved in a high-speed chase that ended in a crash on Monday in Port Wentworth, Georgia, after allegedly stealing an ambulance. The incident started around 4 p.m. when local police responded to a two-vehicle collision in Rincon involving suspects who fled on foot.

During the pursuit, Simmons, driving the stolen ambulance south toward Port Wentworth, collided with a Rincon patrol car, causing it to crash into another vehicle. The officer sustained minor injuries. Despite efforts to stop the chase with a PIT maneuver, the ambulance ultimately crashed into a ditch near Saussy Road and Highway 21 after spike strips were deployed.

Simmons was arrested at the scene and faces numerous charges including hijacking a motor vehicle, multiple counts of aggravated assault, fleeing police, hit and run, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, failure to obey traffic signals, obstruction, and interference with emergency personnel and government property.

A second man, Georgell Brown, 51, fled the initial crash scene on McCall Road and was later arrested on loitering charges. Both men are held at Effingham County Jail and have not cooperated with investigators.
