Authorities in Las Cruces have confirmed that 29-year-old Juan Lujan Garces was killed in a deadly shooting incident that occurred Tuesday morning near Picacho Avenue, close to Quesenberry Street and Motel Boulevard. Police were called to the scene where a man had reportedly barricaded himself inside a ground-floor motel room following the gunfire.
After a standoff, officers arrested 25-year-old Pancho Garcia, who is now facing an open count of murder. Garcia was taken to the Dona Ana County Detention Center, where he is currently being held without bond.
As a result of the incident, Picacho Avenue was temporarily shut down between Quesenberry Street and Motel Boulevard, and access from 17th Street was also blocked off. Police urged nearby residents to either evacuate or remain indoors during the operation.
