Landon Baldwin dies in fatal San Diego plane crash
Fatal San Diego plane crash death of Landon Baldwin – Obituary
Landon Baldwin, a pilot from Pima, Arizona, and his wife Torrie Baldwin were among six people who lost their lives when a small aircraft went down off the coast of San Diego on Sunday, June 8. The couple, both in their twenties, leave behind two young children.
The aircraft, a Cessna 414, departed from San Diego International Airport and was en route to Phoenix, Arizona, when it crashed into the Pacific Ocean around 12:30 p.m. local time. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the plane went down under unclear circumstances roughly three miles west of Point Loma, where the water was about 200 feet deep.
Family members identified Landon and Torrie as two of the victims. Four other passengers, believed to be a father and his three adult sons from Arizona, were also on board.
According to radio communications reviewed by local outlets, Landon reported difficulty gaining altitude and told air traffic control that he was only flying at 1,000 feet. Controllers instructed him to ascend to 4,000 feet and attempt a landing at a naval air station on Coronado Island. Before the crash, he sent out repeated Mayday calls.
A witness stated that the aircraft initially appeared to be performing aerial maneuvers but soon realized it was in distress. The witness observed the plane descending at an angle before crashing nose-first into the ocean, followed by an eerie silence.
The Coast Guard launched a joint search operation, and both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are continuing their investigation into the crash.
