Fatal Kerry cycling accident death of Paddy O’Donoghue – Obituary

Paddy O’Donoghue, an 81-year-old man from Gortahoonig, Muckross in Killarney, lost his life after a tragic bicycle collision in Kilgarvan, County Kerry on Tuesday, June 10.

The crash occurred at approximately 1:40 p.m. on the R569 near the Church Grounds area, where O’Donoghue was struck by a vehicle while cycling. Authorities confirmed he was pronounced dead at the scene. A postmortem is scheduled and the coroner has been notified.

Well known in his local community, Mr. O’Donoghue was remembered as a kind and generous person who had a passion for cycling and the outdoors. He was a regular participant in the Ring of Kerry Cycle and held a long-standing connection with the Glenflesk GAA club as a former player, mentor, and loyal supporter.

Glenflesk GAA offered heartfelt condolences, calling him a true stalwart of the club. Friends shared memories of his warmth and helpful nature, including one story of how he once helped a stranded driver to safety and repaired the vehicle—all without truly knowing the person.

Paddy is survived by his wife Brenda and their children Florence, Áine, Denise, Brenda, Báirbre, Patrick, and Alice. Funeral details are expected to be announced on Thursday, June 12.

Gardaí have closed the road where the accident occurred and are appealing for any witnesses, especially those with dash-cam footage between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., to come forward. Those with information are urged to contact Killarney Garda Station, the Garda Confidential Line, or any Garda station as the investigation continues.
