Fatal Hampton murder-suicide death of Randy Gilliland – Obituary

Randy Gilliland, a former member of the Hampton City Council, and his mother, Patsy Palmer Gilliland, were both found dead in an apparent murder-suicide early Tuesday morning in Hampton, Virginia.

 

At around 6:30 a.m. on June 10, authorities received a 911 call from a man stating he had shot his mother. Before officers could arrive, police believe the man turned the gun on himself. Upon entering the residence on Capps Quarters, law enforcement discovered both individuals dead from gunshot wounds.

 

The deceased were later identified as 64-year-old Randy Gilliland and his 86-year-old mother, Patsy Palmer Gilliland. Police confirmed the situation appears to be a murder-suicide, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

 

Gilliland served on the Hampton City Council from 2002 to 2010, including a term as vice mayor. At the time of his death, he worked as director of philanthropy at Equal Justice America, an organization dedicated to supporting legal services for underprivileged communities.

 

City officials, including Mayor Jimmy Gray and City Manager Mary Bunting, expressed deep sorrow over Gilliland’s death, calling it a tragic event. The Hampton Police Division’s Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
