Stephen Dowhan dies in fatal Grand Rapids bike crash

Fatal Grand Rapids bike crash death of Stephen Dowhan – Obituary

Stephen Dowhan was killed earlier this year after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The incident occurred on the evening of January 11 around 6:30 p.m., when a vehicle coming off northbound US 131 collided with Dowhan as he crossed Pearl Street near Scribner Avenue NW. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, identified as Kaleb Stressman-Pilot, was initially arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated. However, after a detailed investigation and toxicology testing, prosecutors determined there wasn’t enough evidence to pursue charges of driving under the influence or reckless driving.

According to Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker, the results did not show that Stressman-Pilot had a blood alcohol level above the legal limit. Moreover, there was insufficient proof to support a charge of reckless driving causing death, which legally requires a clear disregard for the safety of others.

As a result, the prosecutor’s office charged Stressman-Pilot with a moving violation causing death—a misdemeanor that can carry up to a one-year jail sentence, a $2,000 fine, and a suspension of driving privileges for one year.

An arraignment for Stressman-Pilot is scheduled for June 25.
